Intent: research. Touchscreen latency is the invisible tax on every interactive exhibit.
When touch feels “off,” teams often blame hardware. But most real-world issues come from the end-to-end pipeline: sensing → OS input → app event loop → render → GPU → display scanout.
This guide is a practical checklist you can run before you ship (or before you accept an installation).
What “latency” means on a touchscreen
Latency is the time between a user action and a visible response. For touch, it’s often discussed as input-to-photon: the moment a finger moves to the moment pixels update.
High latency shows up as:
- sluggish drags
- overshoot and “rubber band” corrections
- missed taps when users speed up
- people pressing harder (a classic symptom)
A fast measurement method (good enough to decide)
You don’t need a lab to make progress.
- High-speed video: record finger + screen at 240fps (many phones can do this).
- Count frames: measure frames between finger motion and pixel response.
- Convert to ms: (ms \approx frames \times (1000 / fps)).
This won’t perfectly isolate display scanout, but it’s enough to spot regressions and compare builds.
Pipeline causes that commonly bite exhibit teams
1) The event loop is overloaded
If you’re doing heavy work on the main thread (layout, decoding, synchronous I/O), you get input lag.
- Move work off the main thread where possible.
- Batch and debounce where appropriate.
- Avoid long tasks during interaction.
2) You’re rendering more than the display can show
If your render time spikes above the refresh budget (16.6ms @ 60Hz), users feel it instantly.
- Profile frame times, not average FPS.
- Prefer stable frame pacing over occasional bursts.
- Reduce overdraw and big transparent layers.
3) Touch sampling and display refresh are mismatched
Some stacks sample input at one rate and display at another. You can end up with “jitter” that feels like latency.
- Test on the exact hardware panel you’ll deploy.
- Validate with real interaction patterns (fast flicks, edge drags, multi-user).
4) Accessibility modes aren’t first-class
Touch-only UI excludes people.
At minimum:
- keyboard support for critical flows
- focus visibility
- scalable type
- motion-reduced mode (avoid forced parallax)
If you’re building a public installation, consider a parallel access path (QR to a web-accessible view, or a nearby ADA-friendly kiosk flow).
Acceptance checklist (print this)
- Touch response feels consistent at 1 user and at peak crowd load
- No visible lag on drags across the full screen, including edges
- Multi-touch doesn’t degrade to “single user” under load
- Fonts stay readable at typical viewing distance
- Key flows work without touch (keyboard, alternative input, or companion access)
